Thank you for taking the time to read about the Sandbach & District Talking Newspaper and the voluntary service we provide to the local community. We are a Registered Charity set up in 1986, with the objective of assisting the visually impaired, or those suffering some temporary or permanent incapacity or disability which makes reading a strain, by the provision of recorded tapes or tactile reading matter.

"Newsweek"

Each week we produce “NEWSWEEK”, our local Talking Newspaper, in which we record items of local news with views, information and readers’ letters from the local newspapers onto audio cassette for our listeners. This enables them to keep up-to-date with what is happening in the local community.

The areas we report on cover:

·        Sandbach

·        Middlewich

·        Alsager

·        Holmes Chapel

·        Goostrey

In addition we produce “special” tapes which are also sent to each listener. These include our monthly extracts from the prestigious Cheshire Life magazine and our twice-yearly extracts from Congleton Borough Council’s The Link publication. Recently we have also started to record extracts from the quarterly This England and Evergreen magazines as well. This means that some weeks we are producing in excess of 200 tapes and at least 7000 each year!

All volunteers

To meet this task we have some 70 volunteers, including:

  • Editors
  • Readers & Relief Readers
  • Recording Technicians & Relief Technicians
  • Administrators
  • Trustees & Committee members

All of these are volunteers and give their time at no cost. They are a dedicated team whose only objective is to put a little light into the world of their listeners. If you would like to join the team, please go to the Help Us! page.

Our History

The Sandbach & District Talking Newspaper has 20 years of history. Some of the highlights have been:

  • our first recording was made in December 1986 using facilities and recording equipment much less sophisticated than we have today.
  • in April 2004 we moved to our new purpose-built studio on the outskirts of Sandbach
  • our 1000th recording was made on 14th June, just under 20 years since our first tape was made in 1986. Our Honorary President, Lady Winterton MP, recorded a special message.

Donations

We rely on donations to help us cover the running costs of the charity. We are very grateful to have received donations from organisations such as the Samaritan Masonic Lodge, Alsager Rotary Club and Cheshire Primary Health Care Trust.
